Obama Comes to Oregon
Categorized under Medios , Race for '08 | Tags: Citizen Journalism, Eugene, MTV, Obama, Oregon
SAW OBAMA last night at "The Pit," as it's known here in Oregon. Eugene residents are very proud of their sports, it's a big sports town (check into the history of Nike in Eugene, while you're at it), and the arena where Obama spoke is a famed site for high energy and sound. And I'll tell you right now that the energy and sound were through the roof last night.
Got a Press Pass, as you can see, and was lucky enough to be placed right on the riser with CNN, the local FOX affiliate, KVAL, all the local TV, all the big boys and super gals, and it while it was not the first time I had Press credentials at an event, it was the first time at one like this.
It was a full work day, and it was EXHAUSTING. About eight hours, and much of it involving hustle and hunger. Though that time period is almost equal to what many people spent waiting in line!
I do have fantastic video and sound, and my next piece for MTV will be on this event, and so I won't use any screenshots here or even pics of Obama, and I'll save all the juiciest bits for my vlog and blog over there.
But here are a couple shots taken with my iPhone or of me by someone else. Just to give you a peek into the night, and a prelude to the next MTV vlog.

Home of the Ducks! You saw that green hat I wore in this vlog. There was a lot of that at the event, that logo. This is "The Pit."

Look how bleary I look. Wait until you hear the story of how the whole thing began. This guerrilla filming thing has its downsides. I was so tired last night, I got to bed later than I ever do, and today my body is ultra sore. Hope the friend I told I would call last night understands why I never did! Note the nifty electronic gadget stuck in my ear. All the coolest media types have eargadgets.

This was before the speeches began, and the room was still filling up. Some singers were performing a cappella on the stage, and security was doing their thing all over the place.
It was a rush just being on the Media riser. Filming Obama, presidential candidate and soon-to-be Democratic nominee. The audience's response to his presence and his words sounded and felt like a thunderstorm indoors.
More in a couple days.

Thanks for the views. Congrats on your first Big Boy gig. They are really a lot of work. Only the media viewing public thinks the job is glamorous, the insiders will tell you otherwise. Don't forget to eat, next time bring food. Productions, especially live events, go on forever. At a certain point you start to hallucinate. Makes problems in the viewfinder.
I look forward to eventually reading your blow by blow.

RC, you got it man. i was baffled by the fact that it wiped me out for a full day afterward! i'm like "what did i do???" sore, tired, as if i went on a hike or something! wow.

too bad, jaime, wonder why. they did check over my "papers" twice, too, to make sure i wasn't just some guy saying "MTV! MTV!" security was intense. clinton may come here some say, without tons of enthusiasm. i'll cover that, too, if so. but at least this area seems to be going for Obama in a big way.

"Like a hike" is a good description. In my late teens and early twenties {1970} I used to hand hold all day and change film cans, and keep an eye on the Uher recorder also. I know we must have been eating something, and since it was NYC, it was probably bagels with ? and plenty of coffee. If I were ever to do that now {I don't have any intention!} I think I would keep an extensive collection of carbohydrate and protein bars with me, maybe CLIF bars, and some drinks in sterile packs, plus water.
That way, the physical stress is somewhat less.
I guess I would choose the least drippy and gooey snacks as they don't go well with electronics.
At 1600 Broadway when we were cutting these epics we lived on coffee and cigarettes and of course, bagels. Sometimes we didn't leave the room for three days if we had a deadline. I do not recommend the method. There were actually little couches like psychiatrist couches in the rooms so you could crash for a few hours instead of going home. Later I leased a Steenbeck for my apartment, my body got tired of 1600 B'way, but I met all the pros there.
Yes, it is true that in that era we smoked like chimneys in the film cutting rooms.
Enjoy your post production and take care of the fragile vessel of mortality.
I anticipate your later text report.
