Occupational Hazard
Categorized under Política Estados Unidos , Race for '08 | Tags: Clinton, Obama
I'M NOT HERE to be an unwavering bullhorn for Obama. That is utterly boring. And yes, I don't think there's any contest between him and Senator Clinton, as far as who could get more done. Or who would be more uplifting as a President in a few senses. Or who would think more from a bottom-up standpoint, given their backgrounds (and look at fundraising as an example). So it would be silly for me to pretend I'm not biased in who I would choose from the available choices. (Though yes, I'd try to cover Senator Clinton if she came to Eugene as I did Obama).
Also, I do think it's unfortunate the post that was up the other day got scrapped. I do think it's good to point out how each party still buys into the idea of occupation. I do think it's good to pressure Democratic candidates on this. I also think they both (all) have reasons to present themselves as ready to hold the ground there, as we are still in this age where the party lines are WarOnTerrible and I wonder how much it is idealism vs practicality to expect them to run on pulling all troops out entirely. Don't some need to stay? Or is it better for the Dems to be straightout anti-war vs the Republicans War Forever? I just wonder if the Dem nominee could possibly say that—draw that hard, hard line (no troops even to clean up anything? or bring in water? but no....there will be violence as long as we walk those streets)—and not lose a big amount of center-right votes. Both Obama and Clinton and Democratic candidates in general must retain some whiff of military readiness, don't you think? Or....?
Regardless of the answer, I do not want to stop on the conversation. I just want it to take a certain tenor, my end, too.
