We Give Much for Little

Categorized under Política Estados Unidos | Tags: ,

WHY DO WE excuse the nastiest, ugliest, least ethical behaviors when candidates run for office? It's sad how easily we do it. I suppose we have given up on fair campaigning. We've never seen it. But see how we can write off deception and trickery and maligning and just about any attempt to steal the throne, and without flinching! Someone lies to millions of people in hopes of achieving power over them, and we simply smile and say "That's politics!" which is something like saying "That's fire!" when your friend is writhing in coals on the ground and screaming in pain.

If one believes that the Ends Justifies the Means (i.e., doing anything to gain power is justified by the gaining of the sought power), then I assume s/he also believes that the death of one million people and the maiming of countless others and the loss of irreplaceable museum items and mosques and the construction of an illegal and cruel prison that denies humans due process but tortures them unhesitatingly is all acceptable because it will, in the end, insure the USA access to more oil.

After all, that was the plan, and that will be the end result. Do the means matter?

CheneyBush would say no. CheneyBush knows that all that matters to most of us in the end is increased land, fuel, or power. It ain't pretty, but it's true. And that's why supporting war and our troops despite anything it might harm or they might do is misnamed so often as "Patriotism." Because underneath, we understand quite well that whether its about freeing foreigners or just killing them and stealing their shit, the Shit will be coming back home eventually.

Thoreau was incensed by our invasion into Mexico, so much so that he refused to pay taxes and went to jail. But who cares anymore that the USA took Mexico's land, or by what means? We got all the gold in California, and lots of sunny acreage. Anyone complaining? Why would they?

"That's Hegemony!" I'd reply.

Further, why care about the Telecoms spying on us? They were doing it in their chase for profits. They had an Ends, and they used any means. "That's capitalism!" Right? Why care about anything, in fact?

"That's life!"

We accept too little from our politics and our leaders.

It's all part of the 'normalization' process of mainlining evil into the conscience. It isn't torture, it's advanced interogation techniques. Intentional targeting of civilians isn't war crimes, it's collateral damage. and the list could on. Anytime I hear someone say 'Better them than us' I reply with 'I want a third choice, how about neither?'. Too many people can't seem to get their mind around that.

kick it, ése.
