With Support Like That
Categorized under Medios , Política Estados Unidos , Race for '08 | Tags: Clinton, Obama, SNL
SO TELL ME. How does having a black man who supports Obama coming on SNL and calling Tiny Fey "bitch" in response to her statement "bitch is the new black" (he responded "black is the new president, bitch") "support Obama"? Hmm? Because I can't imagine the Clinton team being happier than to have it believed that Obama supporters are not FOR Obama, but are against "bitches." Good move, Tracy. Nice sleight, SNL.
The writer of the Huffpost article litters the page with snark like its an unwieldy christmas toy too big to handle but too hot to leave alone, ironically revelling in mocking those who imply that media can influence people (trust me if you can't, you won't be paid long working in media!) and acting smug pointing out Tracy Morgan's piece, as if now SNL can be said to be fairNbalanced in its political support.
But...I watched this gag. And I felt, after, that it very well could easily have been written by Clinton supporters. All it does is underline all the things that would drive certain groups to Clinton in droves. In that vein, it plays up sexism very strongly (mocking a woman answering a phone crying and in fear, using "bitch" not as "dawg" but as "bitch".)
Mark down another one in the SNL pro-Clinton (tho much sneakier) column. Written and approved by SNL, this piece is as much "support for Obama" as the fake personas in comment threads pretending to be for one candidate while acting so grossly that their affilation can only stain by association.
HOWEVER I must add for reasons of satisfying my need to state the obvious: Continuing to hold Presidential candidates responsible for what random supporters say (and I don't mean people working for the campaign, but nonaffiliated supporters) is kind of silly. Smacks of desperation.

I didn't find it nearly as funny or as resounding an endorsement as other Obama supporters did, but I saw it a little differently than you.
With regard to the phone thing, I didn't take the mocking as "mocking a woman answering a phone crying and in fear." It seemed to me that they were mocking the portrayal of Barack Obama as someone who's too weak to answer the phone at 3 AM by the Clinton campaign.
As for using "bitch" not as "dawg" but as "bitch", I hadn't considered that. I've been reticent about the liberal use of b-word on SNL in general, but I thought Morgan use was an allusion to Fey's own words ("Maybe what bothers me the most is that people say that Hillary is a bitch. Let me say something about that: Yeah, she is. And so am I and so is this one." (pointing to Amy Poehler)).
Everyone's going to see it a little differently, but that Huffington Post piece seems to be a particular stretch.

Interesting. I wonder what most women would hear from the spot.
I do get your reasoning. But I'm thinking when you respond to a woman kicking out self-empowerment ("bitch is the new black") by saying "black is the new president, bitch" it just plays into too much misogyny. Doesnt it feel like the perfect spot were you to want to deepen divisions? Why must it be black vs bitch? See, that's what I mean. This ad sure wouldn't win me over to Obama, and honestly, I don't feel good about it. But again, I do wonder what other feedback will tell us about it. You and I are only two people.
That being said, my problem with the Clinton campaign has nothing to do with whether Bitch is the New Black or not. I just know that I dont feel the Clinton Campaign is the New anything, really. She just seems to me a woman Good Ole Boy, a woman Hawk, a woman Republican. So the 'bitch' part, while exciting and tuff and new in a President, just doesn't inspire me enough to overcome the Good Ole Boy Using McCain Frames Same Ole Same Ole part.

SNL jumped the shark a long time ago.
I'm just saying.

Actually it's brilliant in its own fucked up little way because it also plays into racist stereotypes of MOC being misogynistic.
Add in the ever present problem of "agressive MOC Vs. White Lady" dynamics that go back to when it was used to justify lynchings (and by lynchings I'm including the Tulsa Race Riot due to laziness mostly) and you have some really interesting (hopefully unintentioanl) subtexts flying all over the place.
And worst of all, it ain't all that funny either.

right. you sort of see all the things i saw in it. "brilliant in its own fucked up way" which is what angers me the most. it will work on many. in ways not seen by many.

She's trying to use my vag as a fucking hat, and that's a pretty fucking new thing let me tell you...
Basically she fails on the simple point that she doesn't represent women who are not her-sweet-privelaged-self, and while Obama is pretty much the same, He at least has the decency of not telling me how much he represents me while turning around the next second and declaring that the reason why I haven't got medical cover is because I'm lazy or some such bullshit.
She's force-them-to-eat-cake, reality de-based lady as far as I can make out, DO NOT WANT.
But as Bellatrys (actually Safe For Work despite what Livejournal randomly declares) points out, it's not really a matter of who we like when you get right down to it, it's who we the electorate can control in office (and who can get into office in the first place of course *COUGH*voteObama*COUGH*).
So I'll give you three guesses which one of the two is currently talking about how she's going to try and get the delegates to swtich sides so she can win the race even if she loses the popular vote, and the first two guesses don't count.
