OOOOH. Now that is an interesting idea.

Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, who produced "Pan's Labyrinth," will direct two big-budget films based on J.R.R Tolkien's book "The Hobbit," the Hollywood studios involved said Thursday.

After months of media speculation, New Line and MGM studios confirmed del Toro, 43, would join New Zealand producer Peter Jackson on the projects.

I love del Toro — The Devil's Backbone and Pan's Labyrinth are two of the best movies I've seen in recent years. I was very underwhelmed by Jackson's Lord of the Rings movies, though; I'll try to be cautiously optimistic about The Hobbit.

wow. that sounds like it could be one of the coolest things in a long time. (i was not in the least underwhelmed by LOTR, i've gotta say. even with the aryan lovefest that was going on in it. damn, that's kinda sad!)
