A Memorial of My Own
Categorized under Guerra , Iraq the Casbah , Violencia , día festivo | Tags: Iraq, Memorial Day, Support the Truth, War, War Crimes, war on terror
ON THIS DAY I choose to remember all the babies dead in Iraq because of my nation's greed. On this day I choose to memorialize all the children dead or maimed in Iraq because of my nation's aggression. On this one day, this Monday, I choose to remember all the women raped in Iraq because of our invasion. On this day I choose to remember all the Iraqi fathers and brothers and grandfathers and sons shot dead or blown up with drill holes in their heads or dog head sewn onto their necks, or phosphorous that peeled their skin off of their skulls, or women's underwear stretched over their terrified faces as they cringed naked in a dungeon, under a gun, and denied dignity.
I do empathize with any American young man or woman tricked by this monster of our military and it's hymn of bloody, mindless, duty. You have been used by those Generals Gathered in Their Masses, and you will, most likely, be cast aside when you are done. I hope you look to the people who recruited you and the empty stories they told you, when your fury rises. And I hope your families help you heal.
But I choose to align my sympathies today primarily with those who have been invaded, dominated, occupied, colonized and killed, in the past and in the present—and all because of my nation's addiction to the violence we believe makes us Great, the "glory" of war, and the spoils that we do this for.
If you are mad at the fact that I wrote a blog post prioritizing Iraqis over US soldiers today, well. I'm sure it's but a grain of pique next to the ocean of sorrow and rage that our soldiers have helped foist upon so many who do not have homes, families, legs, arms, peace of mind or lives anymore, let alone blogs. And I'll leave it at that.

I'm with you, Nez. Murder is murder, whether it's perpetrated by an individual or a nation.

Thank you so much for this focus and comments on Memorial Day. I am a mother of two grown sons and if they were killed for what? nothing in this way, it would destroy me. I multiply this by hundreds of thousands of mothers in Iraq and Afghanistan, against whom this country has aggressed. If we keep in mind that every person who dies in a war is some mother's child, it keeps our attention where is should be. Thank you for this reminder.

thanks for reminding me that some people still live in reality...got off a flight this morning where we were asked to honor the veterans of "any war, all wars" for "fighting for our freedoms".

You are so right. I have SO many relatives that have been involved with the US Army in a period of over 40 years, and even in a time in when African-Americans were barely accepted in this country.
I have a relative that died in Afghanistan. R.I.P.
Thanks for posting this.

as tom said, amen...my thought exactly to your post. yes yes yes...support the truth. this invasion/occupation of iraq, a horror of the addiction to greed. victims are the children of mothers and fathers, the mothers and fathers of children, and the soul/spirit of our world we live in. this is not a case to be one of the morality monkeys...we must see the evil, hear the evil, and speak of the evil that is taking place. yes, support the truth. thank you for your mindful and compassionate observation, nezua.
