WHILE HE WAS NOT quite slammin' shots with the Crow Indians, Obama clearly did impress the Crow Nation with his attention today.
After holding a town hall meeting in Billings, Barack headed to the Crow Nation Reservation in Crow Agency, Montana, where he was formally adopted as a member of the Crow tribe. He was given a Crow name, AWE KOOTA BILXPAAK KOOXSHIIWIASH, which translates to "he who helps all people of the land."
From his speech:
..I believe treaty commitments are paramount law, I'll fulfill those commitments as President of the United States. I'll provide quality healthcare to those on reservations. That's why I'm fighting to ensure full funding of Indian health services....As president, I will never forget what this park is meant to honor, the service and sacrifice of generations of Native Americans throughout this country. We will keep our sacred trust.
...We have a lot of work to do in this country for all people: black, white, Hispanic, Asian, Native American. We are all one people.
...It starts with a sense of respect. It starts with the belief that all people are worthy of respect. I will never forget you. You will be on my mind every day that I'm in the White House.
...We can make sure that we have a President who's committed to what's right: respecting you, honoring you. And now that I'm a member of the family, you know that I won't break my commitment to our family.

You made me cry! This is the first time I have seen an actual presidential candidate go to the rez and talk to people. as an un-recognized Steilacoom, I applaud this message!

thank you nezua for this exposure. obama should be given the chance to keep this promise, to honor the treaties, as well as address the contemporary needs of the tribes and the reservations. to help right the wrong. this will assist to re-establish an integrity to government, (long absent), globally give honor and respect to the North American Indian, and their truly beautiful cultures, (which is way way over due). he also spoke to the idea of "Indian Country" as a sovereign nation. this is the direction to heal the hurts and injuries of past injustice, which is necessary for the better way for us all. maybe we could then have a thanksgiving with meaning that is not tainted by lies.
