As you might have heard, two presidential candidates decided to visit the little island of Puerto Rico this Memorial Day weekend. They took in the sights:
and answered some questions.
They came, they saw, they spoke. Typical behavior for politicians during a primary season. Except this is no ordinary primary. We have two candidates who are down to the wire fighting for the nomination of their party. Every vote counts. And so they come "down here" to do their thing. But don't expect to see them around here ever again, win or loose. You see Puerto Rico is a living breathing reminder of some ugly realities. To confront the realities of "down here" you need to face them. Behind the singing and the dancing, around the corner from the tourist traps lies the face of the Haunted Land. To look upon us is to look at Mexico, Guatemala, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Colombia, Panama, Korea, Vietnam and so many other places. It is to look at the face of empire by proxy.
You are probably asking yourself: what the hell is this guy talking about? I mean around here we...
Don't pay federal taxes...
Receive millions of dollars in aid...
Are already American citizens....
You are special, you are blessed....aren't you?
The answer is NO. We are not the exception to the rule, we are the rule. We are a nation in name only. We are a people afraid of the future and hunted by our past. We are ruled by proxy rulers happy to sell us out to their Imperial masters. We are a people spread far and wide. Our young men and women fight foreign wars in foreign lands under a foreign flag. We cling to our culture, our language and our history. The people that one call this place Boriquen are long gone, only traces remain in our blood. A land torn apart from within by apathy and greed. A poisonous river flowing northward sweeping everything in it's path.
So like a whirlwind or a fact finding mission, the candidates show up one day and leave the next. They will talk about more police on the streets or more money for veteran hospitals. But they won't talk about the real issue, about the future. I wonder if Obama heard the cries of his African brethren while he dance to their music. I doubt it. Nope, no talk of freedom or democracy (the real deal, not "democracy from the barrel of a gun" crap) around here, they might fall down the Orwellian well and never come out again. Better to ignore all of that.
I don't expect to see them again. They won't come round here no mo!

Thanks Rafa. Pardon me {Nez or Rafa} but the next time you use the satellite shot could you ease PR over a bit so that the shot shows Vieques and Culebra? They lie to the east. That would be nice. Out here in the Atlantic we often feel we are the colony of a colony.
