The New Ford Reconquistador!

Categorized under Humor | Tags: , , , ,

MEXICO CITY - Ford Motor Co., in a struggle to regain profitability, will build its new Reconquistador subcompact at a factory near Mexico City for sale in the US.

It is a blow to Detroit.

But for Mexico, Friday's announcement – which has been heralded as the largest manufacturing investment in the country's history – is a decisive feat.

President Felipe Calderón called the $3 billion deal a "turning point in the secret plan to retake México's power back."

Let the nativists who have hijacked the immigration dialogue rage on about vodka ads and poor, destitute farmers looking for work. The Reconquista rolls on, funded mostly by US dollars! So Lou Dobbs and Pat Buchanan and Michelle Malkin should turn their ire toward their beloved Free Market. They are looking silly, all spit-bedazzled and far behind the times."

—Felipe Calderón

While the US automaking industry sags – undergoing massive restructuring and downsizing – Mexico's production has expanded, especially for small, low-cost vehicles. Last year, Mexico produced a record number – over 2 million – and analysts forecast that by the year 2015 production could at least double.

It has not just been auto manufacturing plants relocating south of the border, the same can be said for many centers of US production, such as Hershey Chocolate, the aerospace industry and many fruit and vegetable farms. Ford's move follows earlier forays into Mexico by both Honda and BMW.

A US recession is bound to affect the Mexican car industry, where the majority rolled out head north for export. But amid high gas prices that are fueling the market for smaller cars, Mexico could position itself as a center for fuel-efficient vehicles – a pivotal development after years of shedding manufacturing jobs to China and beyond.

"Asia is where all the growth is. But now all of a sudden Mexico is looking pretty good again," says Greg Gardner, an analyst. While China offers automakers lower wages than Mexico, he says that the gap is shrinking faster than the contents of a bottle of Don Julio left unattended in Jalisco.

The US is outsourcing jobs left and right as it imports wheat and rye and increasing amounts of cars and toys and radios and computers and chocolate, and...what really does the USA make anymore, aside from war? A nation cannot be mighty on war alone. This way lies destruction and demoralization. When a People no longer reserve the right to create and revere the act of creating, they have nothing left which will sustain them."

—Greg Gonzales Gardner, aka "Nezua"

Felipe Calderón poured himself a shot of tequila and laughed when asked if he would be purchasing one of Ford Motors' new Reconquistador compact vehicles.

"Chale! I don't want to rub the USA's declining power in anyone's face," he said. "They did help me stea—er, win the election, after all. No, I'll stick with the car I have. There are too many in México as it is." He raised the glass to his lips and took a thoughtful sip before adding, "the locus of power has already shifted, anyway. Let's give US Citizens some time to adjust to the new reality."

¡je! ¡je!... Maybe Don Felipe will get himself one of those new Reconquistadores. I think Vicente Fox took home the double-cab Dodge Ram Pickup he used until he had back surgery, when he was carted around in an armored VW mini-bus (for real!). I always thought it was a political mistake for Lopez Obrador to give up his battered old Tsuru (Mexican Corolla) for a Jetta. Sent the wrong image, verdad?

My friends in Mexico tell me that gas is only 2$ USD per gallon right now. So they'll be selling those Reconqs to the farmers.
